Sorry to offend you, but if you REALLY think about it, the only reason that people play paladin is the carsmyr. no carsmyr? no paladin players. Well thats an exaggeration, but the carsmyr does play an influential part in paladin choosing.

No offence taken, but by the way, in almost all RPGs, I follow my signature. Though I suppose the friggin +5 sword will encourage more Paladin players in BG2, just so that the player can say he/she wielded the HOLY AVENGER. ------------------ If not a Sorcerer, then a Paladin. |

Try Totemic Druid dual to Fighter, a lot of fun !!!
Cast magic, wear heavy armor, summon spirit animals for help and grand master weapon skill !!! 2 spirit animals + 1 fire elemental can take care all beholders and vampires who need undead hunter? Dual to fighter at lvl 11, so you can summon fire elemental, put all the point on quarter staff because +3, +4 staffs are easy to get in the game, and a point on either two handed weapon or sling and you're ready to go. |

Well alot of guys play Kensai/mage because you can become a excellent melee fighter with them, a mystical swordsman who has great offensive skills backed by great magic. A Kensai/mage who learns 2 weapon style and Grandmasters a katana will rock in the game, with Celestial fury and another great katana.
Fighter/clerics are also great, either dual classed or multi-classed. Basically a suped up cleric with better fighting skills. Sorcerer's are incredible, If you can play a mage good, you can play a sorcered even better. If you know how to play a mage, your sorcerer will outshadow any mage (cept maybe a fighting mage) you make up. I can rock with my Paladin even without the Holy Avenger sword. There are a bunch of Great +3 or better 2 handed swords in the game, alot with great powers. Get A Paladin trained in 2 handed weapons, 2 handed swords, Halbard, and a bow, and your paladin will do incredible. Even without the Holy Avenger sword you will be using WAVE the halbard, or the +4 warblade, or many other halbards or 2 handed weapons. A Undead Paladin will rock in the game no matter what. |

First of all... I always play a paladin the first time through.
But as to your question, I have to agree with the kensai/mage conscensus. I've played that one twice and it's great, although I dualled mine at nine. The berzerker/ mage has the benefit of wearing the various elven chains and using helmets/ gauntlets/ shields, so it's a better choice if you're equipment dependent. Plus, that rage comes in handy against the lich's imprisonment. I usually play my kensai/mage a tank, stopping my baddie filleting long enough to cast a breach spell, and then get back to work. Or send him out ahead after casting invisibility into a cluster of monsters and letting off a Sunfire before mopping up the rest with my katanas. I bet you'd like that one. |

Gwhanos: Youre right there'd be less paladin players if the holy avenger wasn't in the game, but...
No Staff of Magi = No mages, or sorcerers No Crom Faeyr = No priest No Shadow Armour = No thieves No Moon Dog = No rangers No Staff of Woodlands = No druids No Bladesinger Chain = No bards No Gauntlets of Punching = No monks ( this one is tough as the monk is less equipment dependent than other classes to a point). BTW: I'm just pulling yer leg; but I think you get my half-joking point. Heheh!!! Anyway, the people who play a class for one specific item could spare themselves the trouble and use Shadowkeeper.
