1 = 2 only if you're in 9/8 rather than 4/4.

(what else would a Muso write? my brain hurts just looking at this thread!)

LOL that's a good one! I'll tell it to my boyfriend this evening! He's a drummer in a band called Daeonia and he just contributed a bit of groove to a new song which is in 7/8 and which some of the other band members couldn't really play! It's a very good band though, listen to some of their work on their site OK? Here's the link Daeonia

It doesn't appear that the original problem is restricted to the set of real numbers. Well, when you break beyond normal algebra, you will find out that dividing by zero really gives you an infinite number. Therefore, it would still be possible to figure the results. However, since you have placed numbers beside a+b that would give it more than one response and you have stated that a=1=b which can only have one response, there appears to be a misdirection with your conclusion. Ergo, "INCORRECT".

Black Knight had it right! I knew it was wrong, it's just something one of my friends (a true mathmaniac! ) showed me, and I thought it was cool.

The whole thing falls apart when you divide a-b on both sides because a-b=0.
