I suppose the complexity would become a problem with multiple combatants. Still more animations would be nice. I'm getting sick of seeing my paladin duck to dodge a blow coming from above. As for the weights, a longsword, (Historical I'm talking about. The historical longsword blade was about 36 inches it was weilded in two hands.) weighed 2.5 pounds maybe a bit more or less. The one handed sword, which I suppose NWN's short sword will have to cover for weighed about 1.5 pounds. Later larger greatswords weighed about 3-4, then the truly massive true two handers of the renaissance could weigh up to 8 pounds and required a special style to use effectively anyhow. Now theres something wrong when your sword weighs 15 stones. And one stone I'm fairly sure is about 1 pound. The only swords that weighed 15 pounds were parade swords and those weren't used in combat anyhow.

Actually a stone is 14lbs. So those 15 stone swords would weigh in at 210lbs!!

Weights in BG2, NWN and most CRPGs set in the medieval/fantasy settings are measured in pounds.

I play a game called Dark Age of Camelot, they have a pretty decent combat system in it, granted you dont see the blood but you do evade, block and parry.
It takes in for multiple players and abilities also. I have a realm ability called Mastery of Blocking and all you hear when I', in combat is the thunking of hits on my shield. Its cool, Thives get the ability to evade which can be real annoying to an Armsman(tank style class) because you tend to miss alot. Granted with ths game you have to pay to play, but since my social life is all but non existant no worries there. 3 children, work and school= very little interaction with outside stimuli.

Ah yes, DAoC, love that game. True they do have some decent combat system you still are stuck with the computer game functionality which makes combat somewhat messed up. Also DAoC doens't use attacks to the legs.

no attacks to the leg's per say, but you still get hit on them. I couldnt see
that happening in a R/L based game though one solid hit and your leg is shattered, I know

What do you mean you couldn't see that in a RL game, a hit to the arm and your disabled most likely through the incredible pain, a thrust into the knee and the fights over for you, a slice to the back of the knee and your outta action, a cut to the thigh and your disabled and will likely bleed to death provided I don't follow up my disabling attackin with a deadly blow. Leg attacks are incredibly important, if they made a RL based swordfighting game they would be absolutely nescessary. Strikes to the lower body are possibly the hardest to block and anticipate. A blow can easily and swiftly change its line of attack falsely telegraphing your move with this kind of fient wins ya the battle. In a RL based game you'd presumably be skilled enough NOT to get hit in the first place. One hit in most places will disable leaving you open for a kill.

Question Mark

I'm glad someone else is dedicated to seeing weapon reality have a more significant place in gaming. On the other hand, they are only games....

GURPS is a wonderful system that approximates the reality--and the lethality--of combat, including the ability of a person to use a weapon to parry, a shield to block, or armor to absorb a successful hit. Unfortunately, no one has designed a game engine or game that uses GURPS rules.
