people like celine dion, alanis morisette, madonna, jewel etc etc but hailing from japan instead.

i was watching this anime: ghost in the shell stand alone complex, and i was totally blown away by the opening theme song to it. so i figured, hey maybe other japanese music artists are this great too so i should find out who is good and see if i like it.

The title melody from Serial Experiment: Lain is also pure class.

On a whole other note, I saw the most kickass japanese band on Roskilde Festival one year. They played some totally wonderful blend of different kind of march and brass band music from all over the world.

All Music Guide's got a list of Japanese pop-artists as well.
Not much of a fan of the often incredibly cheesy Japanese pop music, though.

I'd personally recommend Pizzicato Five, btw; one of the better Japanese pop-acts (even though even they are not always easy to stomach). But try one of their more famous songs "Twiggy" for example, guaranteed to make you happy. (though not much of a singer/songwriter-act; but then again, neither Celine Dion nor the sample you gave above were of that category either )

Oh, and try some Melt Banana and Mad Capsule Markets while you're at it.

Funny you should mention JPop, I've been picking up a lot of japanese music lately.

If you like dance music, a group called Move is just plain awesome. They play the theme music for Initial D.

If you're looking for straight pop, Kuraki Mai or Hamasaki Ayumi are good choices.

Just a bit of trivia. You probably know this already, the group that performed the theme song for Serial Experiments: Lain is not a Japanese band after all. They're an English band called BOA and the title of the song is "Duvet".

You can check out their website at www.boaweb.co.uk.

Gabrielles, you could try "googling"(web searching) these artistes/bands as they make good Japanese music, namely "ZARD", "My Little Lover", "Le Couple" and "Utada Hikaru"
