Reading this joke got me thinking... it bugged me for some odd reason and I wasn't sure why.

Part of it is that I'd heard it many times before, it's an old gem that keeps coming back. I find it interesting how jokes mutate as time goes on. The first time someone told me that joke (many years ago) it was basically the same except the butt of the joke was black people and the bait was different. These days the racist version can't be told for good reason, so the joke simply mutated to point at a group that wasn't protected from this sort of thing.

I find that the joke bugs me, not because I've a problem laughing at myself (I fit the stereotype of a computer nerd in several ways), but rather because as a white man I find that EVERYONE can make fun of me, but I can't make fun of anyone else.

I think that these days the ONLY valid targets for this sort of joke are men and groups of men that can be stereotyped... and it seems to be open season. Anyway, not trying to stir up shntzel, just something that struck me and I had to think about it.
