I always rest in tight formations that I can clearly see, so it wasn't that. My mage and bard were resting near the door that leads outside ToFG, when I first noticed this effect and made my post; but since then it has happened to both my mage and bard in Dragon's Eye (as I was warned might happen), Level 3.
