Where do you buy Ice cream? at a, Ice cream shop or an ice cream shoppe. Personally I get mine at Dairy Queen, but that is neither here nor there.

I think we just streamlined the English language....

Taking out all those extra letters, it bad enough I am a hunt and peck typer, imagine if I had to type more letters, it's painful enough.

Also, our school systems, at least here in NY have a hard enough time trying to teach these kids(but lets not get into that here and now), so less letters are good.

Well Shoppe is not a 'real' word in UK English [img]tongue.gif[/img] The correct word is Shop. You only see 'Shoppe' used in tourist areas for places called 'Ye Olde Tea Shoppe' because they are trying to be quaint and pull in the tourists.

Except that the English language has two parents. German and French. In "streamlining" the language as you put it, the relevence, the common threads with the French language was further removed.

Litre, Centre, honour, being one example.

It also disregards the international element to English.

In any case what does it matter? American will end up being known as another language in the future. The dialects are gradually splitting.

I think it only took a few hundred years for the common Scandinavian language to split into Norse, Danska and Swedish for example.

Also almost anywhere else in the world if you speak English correctly, you will sound generically "Educated English". New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, India, wherever, the regional accent fades, and an "educated English" accent pervades, when English is spoken correctly.

Not so in America or Canada, by virtue solely of the 'R'. You can at times speak Queens English in America, and not be understood because of this one letter. Speaking American correctly is different to speaking English correctly.

A "fire wire" drive is not a "fah-wah" or "fye-a wye-a "drive is it?

I probably have a unique perspective on this [img]tongue.gif[/img] being an American who learns English (British) as a foreign language at school. My English has turned into a strange mixture of American and British, although I still have a very American pronunciation... so I must ask: was British always #1? Or did it change? And I must agree, I'd spell it battle-axe.
