Just curious who has had fish as pets before.

I used to have ten fish tanks years ago, I really got into fish tanks and it became a hobby of mine. But some of my fish mated and I ended up with more fish and more tanks, aaah!! And it is a decent amount of work to maintain a fish tank. You've got to clean it, monitor the water's PH and hardness level, water temperature has to be right depending on the type of fish, have to have an air pump, gotta keep the filters changed and cleaned, but not cleaned too much or too often because of the beneficial bacteria... So anyway, I was able to give a good 200 fish away to a large pet store in the area, I lucked out that the babies were rainbow colored and very sellable. Was funny, they said two different species of Cichlids would never mate LOL, WRONG! They did mate, several times even LOL, and the combination of their colors made some gorgeous offspring, which is rare, trust me I know, other babies from other of my Cichlids turned out rather brownish and dull, and the petstore only took em cause of the nice pretty rainbow donation LOL.

I have so many fish stories from having so many tanks.

As of now, I have one 55 gal tank, with only two African Synodontis (sp?) Catfish in it. Had them for a good 10 years now. One recently got a white film over his/her eye (I have no idea the gender of my fish, but one is bigger than the other). I upped the water temp to 80, changed the filters. Two days later I added some regular sea salt, though not much, not the recommended dosage (this is that salt that is only like a dollar and looks like it comes in a small milk carton). Three days later I did a 1/3 water change, maybe slightly more. Eye got cleared up after a week, so that's good, but it still doesn't look 100% gone though to me. I still have the temp to 80. Now its looking pale tonight, and the other one is nosing it a lot, not sure if it is biting or not. That's one thing that sucks, when a fish gets sick in tank, the other fish attack it without fail.

Bah fish! Has to be one of the toughest pets to keep really, not incase you get goldfish, which can take a lot of neglect.

So post if you have had fish! Just curious about other's thoughts and experiences.

When i lived with my grandparents, we had a big one. What i remember above all, were those fishes with a huge tail, like if they had bedsheets attached to their butts or something, but really graceful. After only a few days though, the other fish ate almost all of their tails, and they couldn't swim straight anymore. Kinda sad, they died shortly afterwards.

I believe it were mostly those little red and blue Neon tetra's who did that, they swim in large groups and are pretty fast. Maybe i should have punched them like you do.

I have kept betas before. One at a time, of course. Not much clean-up, easy to care for. No need for a large tank. I would like to get a large tank someday with alot of exotic fishies. Until then, I have only had experience with betas.

I have a little 30 gal tank in my dorm room, just started it some weeks ago. It´s not easy to maintain such a small thank. The biggest problem I´ve had is keeping the temperatures stable; my room temperature changes constantly due to refreshing and it´s small size and the lamp heats up the water too. I´ve managed to keep it around 23-27C, and no fishies have died. Water Ph was a problem, but it´s more stable now. It is populated with 2 algae eaters, 1 bronze corydoras and some "wagtails". Hehe.. I love watching them goofing around.

My dad has one 10 gal tank with a single discus in it. We did used to have a 50 gallon tank and two 20 gallons filled with them, but it was too much work for my impatient dad. Plus when redoing their water he always let the tank overflow onto the carpet

I owned a few of them last year, had tetras and a beta, had to keep them seperate, but the tetras froze during a power outage, and the beta died a few months later during a mishap with the pump, planning on buying a new tank soon, and getting me some new fishies

I HAD a fish tank at one point, for my pet turtle, was pretty cool actually. It died. My mom decided a clear, glass, flower vase would be better for her beta. She put it in there with some flowers. It's been living there since the end of summer.

you can see a picture of one of my fish tanks on Stealthy's I recently dismantled that one though in favor of a 45 gallon hexagonal fish tank, takes up way less space then the standard 55 I have. It is fun keeping the live plants going and all that, they dont like the undergravel filters much, some do but not the plants I have I had a small power head going but it stopped working for some reason so at the moment my tank is with out proper water movement, the impellar on the big filter went and I cannot seem to find one to replace it with unless I want to spend another 50$ on a new filter, no thanks Currently I have some blue gorami's and some glass neon tetras as a main staple. A couple algae eaters and some guppies and few gold fish my daughter won at a carnaval 2 years ago nothing special but I have plans of improving the tank.

I used to have some convict chiclids, and boy did I keep the local pet shop in supply. Chiclids are just plain cool but very terratorial, heaven forbid you happen to swim by there favorite nook or hole in a rock.
