The first time I played Icewind Dale I played through until the final battle without using the pause button (real time). The final battle was so difficult that I had almost given up hope of ever completing the game. Then I glanced at my quicksheet and said Oh a pause button to stop combat. The final battle wasn't so tough with the pause button.

Pritchke, although its funny that you did something like that, im actualy impressed you were able to get that far. Maybe some of the less sane members here should try it.

It was brutal so much reloading and exiting back through doors after killing one or two enimies when there was a score left. Spiders were the worse if you didn't remember which guy had the antidotes the character poisioned would die. It does make it challenging though even at the easiest level.

the makers of the game gives yu the option to auto pause the game so that you can plan your move. you need it because you have more than one character to play.

Well done

I also play without pausing, with six people It helps me get more caught up in it-just sort out the inventory between battles and cast spells so that you cast the longer lasting spell first. Although, saying that - I'm only at Severed Hand on Chapter 3 so I may need it later on......

Is it really that much easier to play with pausing than without?

hell yes.
pauzing allows lots of strategy
arrange your summoned undead into formations, move guys around, get one to heal another, get all your mages to blast that target, the archer to disrupt that enemy mage.... then unpause and watch the death unfold!
