Let me get this straight...
4 levels of fighter, then 3 levels of Pally of Ilmater, then X levels of Painbearer of Ilmater. Is this character possible? Yes. Is this character advisable? No. You'll almost certainly take the Favored Class XP penalty. About the only way that you could avoid it would be to play a dwarf, and then keep the levels of pally and cleric even, but I'm not certain. Triplely multiclassed characters are tricky if you are trying to avoid the XP penalty. And you've got to watch out that a 3x MC character doesn't get whacked with double the penalty (i.e. a 40% penalty). For example, An elven ftr 4/ pal 3/cleric 8 would be in serious trouble since none of the classes is the elven FC of wizard, and both the fighter and pally classes are more than 1 level away from the class with the most levels. This character would take the dreaded 40% XP penalty. (Ouch.) |

He could pull it off with a human or half-elf (neither have a specified favored class), bit he would still have to be careful about the pal/cleric levels.
The way the new 3rd ed rules work, it's best not to go past two classes for any character. |

If I read the rules correctly, for a human or half-elf, the highest class counts as the favored class, so since his ftr and paladin levels will always be within one of each other, he can add cleric levels at pleasure without a penalty. Once the cleric levels exceed 4, "cleric" will become the character's favored class...
What I don't know is if he'll be able to make his character a Paladin of Illmater if he already has fighter levels. Never tried it. My Paladins have always been Helmites, but I've only played a couple of groups... -- Mal
