Scary isn't shocks or gross-outs, scary is when you're still afraid after you've stopped playing. When you don't enter a room without turning on the light and avoid dark paths for a night or two.

Doom 3 was creepy, especially on the big screen with sound cranked and lights off. My wife wouldn't play it at all. The only problem with it is it relied too much on the "jump out of nowhere" startle tactic.

Ravenholm on the other hand was creepy in a new way for a shooter. You're standing on top of a building listening to the fast baddies coming closer... then you can see them flying along the street and jumping from rooftop to rooftop. Man that was cool, gave you a good 10 seconds to get nervous and then BAM! they're on top of you and you're fighting for your life. Very cool.

Doom 3 was a snoozefest for me. An hour or two after starting playing for the first time, I could foretell the future. I'd stand in front of a door, tell myself "The little flamy jumping thing is behind this door, and he's gonna jump at me as soon as I open it.", equip the shotgun, open the door, shoot and see a corpse. Doom 3 was IMHO a bad game.

HL2 on the other hand is a master piece.

QFT. The Thief games lend so much atmosphere that it can sometimes make you jump when you see a monster come at you.

The Insane Asylum in Thief (2 I think) was an awesome module... absolutely packed with atmosphere, sneaking around trying to avoid baddies that you knew would kill you no problem. Then the ghost sub-plot... wonderfully executed storyline.

That scene and others like Ravenholm prove it CAN be done... but I think it's a supreme challenge to create a whole game that maintains that level of atmosphere.

If you like scary, you absolutely need to play Thief 3. The shadowbridge cradle (correct?, also known as the insane asylum from above post) was the most scary I and a lot of other people have ever played. I've played D3 too but honestly, only the first three levels or so are scary. You start to get into the "yeah lets blast some more demons" further in the game and they don't surprise you as much as they used to. (the imp in the second level jumping at you through those stairs )

Also from reliable sources I know that System Shock 2 is widely regarded as a scary game, haven't played it yet though. I found Ravenholm to be an irritating but not scary part. Those ubahr zombies are just a pain to shoot down.

Yes it's the cradle. I agree, and it seems even those who didn't care for T3 do too, it is one of the scariest levels in the series. I heard even one guy died from playing it!!!11

Okay not really, but he said he felt like dying or somesuch.

Yep that's the one I was thinking of... it's been a while. Masterful level design, the weird thing is it felt like it belonged to a different game... it was an order of magnitude better than the entire rest of the game... which I didn't think was that bad overall.

A guy died from playing Thief 3? I might just buy this game.
