After exiting the underdark and heading towards the promenade, I get "waylaid" (is that how you spell it?) by Drizzt's party. They are looking for a hammer or something. I have the choice of fighting them or not, and if I fight them, they kick my butt. but is it worth it? do they have any good items?

All depends on your alignment i guess, if you're good then heck no you shouldnt kill him. In fact he will help you in your fight against Bodhi, if you chose to side with the shadow thieves that is.

He will help you fighting against Bodhi even if you sided with Bodhi originally.

Bear in mind that if you have good party members in your group if you fight Drizzt they will be upset some even leave. I'd say don't fight him even if your evil because you don't get to keep Drizzts items so it isn't really worth it it's better to get his help against Bodhi.
