Bladesinger (elven chain), it's the way to go!!!!!

Or you can always make your own fighter/mage armor.

Yeah,if you're fed up with crappy mage armour then make your own.My Mage/thief has some ridiculously powerful armour now.
- AC :2
+30% Hide in shadows
+10% find traps
+10% fire,acid,cold,electrical resistance.
+1 dexterity bonus
Attack speed increase.
Spellcasting time decreased
Spells cast per round increased
- as i said ,ridiculously powerful ...and fun.

If you're a fighter/mage, don't forget to get a good shield and helmet. There are several out there.

I have thought about it a little. A normal mage with 18 dex should start with ac 6 (doesn't matter if he uses robe of vecna). If he then uses robe of vecna he has ac 5, and then he wears the bracers ac 3 which makes him go down to ac -1. Then he wears two ring of gaxx (it's possible in the game without cheating), which makes his ac go down to -5. After that he can wear the cloak +2 and use the staff of magi, and he is down on -9 ac.
-9 ac without spells is quite good for a mage. After that he can boost himself with blur (-12), then tenser transformation (-17).

Summary: The mage can get -9 ac without spells, and -17 with spells.

Anything I forget?

Hmmmmmm...Yes, that must be it

Indeed, but if you decide to import a character for a 2nd game, you can wear it then!

My fighter mage dosent has a very low AC but still, No one can't hit her,
19 dex; robe vecna; the guntlet ac3; cloak of mirror; and just cast stone skin; and chain contengency to store stone skin and again; the other spell trigger. Cast blur; mirror image; improved INV and tenser's and you have a Juggernaut of apocalypse!!!! improved haste is cool too.
