I am wondering whether to buy Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate II. I was recently introduced to everything D+D by my brother. I have played BGI and liked it a lot. I have recently also started reading the Forgotten Realms series of books (very good!). Back to the real question, which of the two is better/more enjoyable?

Both are enjoyable, but considerably different.

If you liked Baldur's Gate, my gut reaction would be to get SOA and the TOB add on. They will provide you some 100+ hours of fun.

NWN, while graphically superior, isn't quite as involved a campaign as BG2 (I am 2/3 through NWN, completed SOA/TOB). The strength of NWN is that you have the ability to create your own modules, or go online and group with other people and play modules other users have created.

Given that any ridiculously staggering modules will likely take a month or more to develop and play test, you could conceivably finish the SOA/TOB series before the best "hand crafted" modules become available.

IMHO NWN is a better game with better goodies, BG2 is a better story (plus a completion of a story line you've already started)

Either game is thoroughly enjoyable and consuming.

If you are going to buy one now, I'd buy BG2... because I saw it at Wal-mart yesterday for $20 since its been out a while. By the time you're done with it, NWN will be much cheaper too.

They are really substitutable as far as spending countless hours infront of a computer. I hate 2nd edition rules, and love 3rd edition, so from a game mechanics standpoint I enjoy NWN a lot more. I liked BG2's option of having more NPC's, and more involved NPCs (particularly Jahiera ), where NWN is more like a solo outing.

As far as storyline goes there isn't a huge difference between the two. NWN seems a lot more 'focused' than BG2.

As far as playing time goes, I don't know where other people are getting their numbers from. I finished BG2 in less time than I've played NWN, and I'm less than halfway through Chapter 3.

And don't forget Throne of Bhaal... in my opinion, it was the funnest 10 hours of the BG series.

If you can find Planescape: Torment, it is a great game. But if you've already beaten BG1, it's only logical to do BG2. It continues the story from BG1. Just make sure you also get Throne of Bhaal, since that completes the story. NWN can wait until you finish those two, since it is brand new and people are just now starting to design stuff for it. They have some great mods (modifications) to BG2 already out there that increase the replayability of the game. So my vote is to finish your story from BG1.

you cant really compare the two just because the two are so different. i voted for NWN jsu tcause i can do more with it. i can enjoy the game online with other people(they are MY npc's). BG2 started to get old.sure theres more playtime per storyline but there is more you can actually do with NWN.

and i hear more people complain about the no npc's in NWN. thats got to be one of the biggest problems people have with NWN. havent you people ever played solo on BG2? it made the game different and more enjoyable to play. it provided more of a challenge to work with. it involved more char development. i mean sure its great to have 5 tanks take all the damage while you kinda sit in the back and try to pick of the more easy ones. but does that really show how good a char you really had?

I pick NWN instead because everytime any baldurs game games come out something bad is bound to happen to me in real life.

I voted NWN, mainly because 3rd ed is a lot better than the 2nd ed (Thac0, str 18/50, no skills, no feats, weird multiclassing....)

I am going to go with Baldur's Gate II. For the main reason that I have beaten BG1 and TOTSC. Though NWN has better graphics and the Toolset, BGII (from most people's opinion) has a better story. Also, BG2 costs less, and when I finish BG2 NWN will be cheaper (Cheap, aren't I?)

Thanks for all the info.
