Just to get closure on this, I worked out what the problem was - my mouse pad was too smooth, causing the little optical thing to go bezerko as it apparently couldn't differentiate differences in the mousing surface I was using. So I got myself a new dark fabric mousepad, with a bit of roughness and friction to the surface, and it works fine now. How silly's that!!

Maybe because there was 40% off the price, it was probably slightly damaged, I suggest you take it back for a refund or get it exchanged.
