Tolkien is the absolute best fantasy writer of all time.

George R.R. Martin, Moorcock, Raymond E. Feist. Those are some of my favorites. To be honest I think that there a lot of great writers out there.

Tolkien for fantasy, Stephen King for horror, Terry Pratchett for humor, Alistair McLean for action, James Joyce for [uhm] drama and Steve Perry for SciFi

There I jst listed all my favourite authors, although I havn't read a Alistair Mclean book since I was 16, but then I think I read all of his books

I really dislike Robert Jordan. His books are far too long and drawn out. They are basically about 600 pages of character development, with 200 pages of actually plot. This is fine for the first couple books of the series, but he does the same thing in the sixth one, "Lord of Chaos," which I'm only reading only beacuse I started the series and I feel I have to read it to conclusion.
As for the best authors, I'd have to say Tolkien and Lewis for fantasy, and H.G. Wells, Asimov, Clarke for sci-fi, and Orwell in general

I would have to say David Eddings. His stories grabed a hold of me and I did not want to put the book down.
