The HP system is pretty cruddy all the way around, but it's worse for wizards.

If you're not running the patch, and don't mind a little creative "cheating", when your priest gets the Toughen spell (4th level Vine), cast it on your characters repeatedly just outside a town gate and then enter. The HP increases become permanent. Helps to nudge the scales a little more in your favor.

Nighthawk: In the meantime, have your priest cast "Repel" on your low HP wizard. It keeps critters from targeting him.

Alternatively, you could "Lure" one of your tougher characters so that the critters beat up on him or her instead.

Saz, yeppers have been doing that, but no fear my warriors have a higher presence than my wizards also which helps. Also i noticed too that which ever character of your group that you have highlighted usually gets hit first too,has anyone else noticed this also.

Thyrane - welcome to the hit point angst club!! So many players have complained about this, with good reason. Just poor planning on the designers part and in the long haul everything does work out alright. Still very frustrating earlier in the game when every hit point seems so very important!

Wyv

(are you playing with or without the patch??)
