I cannot open any of the chests in the rooms leading up to Yxunomei's chambers. What am I missing? I don't have a thief in my party, so I can't pick the locks.

What?!?! Dude, you are in for a HEAP of trouble without a thief! Traps are gonna just pick you apart with no one to find and disarm them. As for the chests, try having a fighter bash them -- just click on their weapon, then click on the chest. That should do it.

Thanks for the advice. For anyone else experiencing this problem: I had to take potion of hill giant strength to successfully bash the locks.

BTW, do you think I can finish the game without a thief? I've tried dual-classing my human fighters, but I guess I don't have the prerequisites to do so.

Bad news...I've not heard from anyone who's finished the game w/out one, but I definitely don't think I could have made it as far into the game as I am without one! There's a LOT of stuff that you can use that you really need a theif (or bard) to get at. Plus, you can get a lot of nifty stuff picking te pockets of the wierd alchemist dude in the flyipng ship. I believe I got a necklace of missile off him, if I remember correctly!
