I've been reading the ToB Manual about Wild Mages and All the funny Spell effects you can get with one. I was thinking of starting one and was wondering if anyone else had tried it.

From reading up on one it's not something I would try to beat the game with, in fact the whole wild mage class seams to be just for kicks and laughs judging by the wild surge tables

Don't underestimate the power of a Wild Mage. If you're not casting Nahal's Reckless Dweomer, the chance of getting a wild surge is only 5%, so that's not too big.
An advantage of a Wild Mage is their versatility: they get the extra spell slot per level of a specialist Mage, but at the same time they have access to all spell schools, unlike a specialist.
Furthermore, Nahal's gives them an opportunity to cast any spell they know, for the cost of only a level one spell. Granted, Nahal's always triggers a wild surge, but their level is added to the roll, and you can further enhance it by protecting yourself with Chaos Shield. This will ensure that, at higher levels, wild surges will usually have positive results rather then negative ones.
Believe me, a high level Wild Mage is a force to be reckoned with.

Hey now, we Wild Mages are not just for kicks and laughs!

Seriously, my favorite character to date is my Wild Mage. I'd have to agree with everything J'aran has said - the Wild Surges really aren't that big of an issue, especially as you reach the higher levels. I can't tell you how grateful I was to be able to cast one Nahal's and gain an extra 9th level spell nearly every time. Sure you get the occasional negative surge, and some of them are rather humorous, I'll admit - but I honestly would not ever go back to a "normal" mage, specialist or otherwise.

Besides being that much more effective, I also find it a bit more interesting. Those few times that I did get a truly negative surge, it usually just presented an additional challenge, which made the game a little bit more fun for me.

Yeah, wild mages are a blast...
I definitey remember hearing about someone who had done a spider spawn, followed by a melf's minute meteors...and they got a wild surge on the meteors which made them area effect...instant spider catapults.

Thanks for your input I will definitely try a Wild Mage the next time around.

On that Note Can you Dual class them? Could you have a Wild Mage/Theif perhaps? I hope so. I wouldn't want to give up one of my fav. cheaps shots the backstab.

I don't think you can. I've never played a Human Wild Mage, only Elf and Half-Elf, so I'm not totally sure, but you can't dual-class any of the Specialist Magi, so I would be very surprised if you could do it with a Wild Mage.
