Hi guys, howrya all doin?

Well, as Reeka was kind enough to post for me, the job was actually the real deal, and I just got the text and law books to start studying for the state insurance exam on Feb 2.

It is UNREAL! I will be working for the Farmer-Stockman, which is one of 36 state agriculture magazines, in the insurance division. The products are all types of life, health, LTC, (long term care), disability, and fixed annuities. Never done it before in my life, but I used to sell advertising to everybody who wanted to sell things to farmers. The paper was one started by my dad in 1977, and to work for/buy him out of the paper is the reason i moved my family back to montana from alaska. I had never done that b4, either, but it seems to be my calling, as my new accounts were over 27% of gross revenue for the paper (a bit over $500,000 annually) after only two years of doing it - and the first month, I only sold one ad for $89!!

Moral of the story, don't ever be afraid to try something you have no idea of how to do - you may just find your calling.

I was so succesful, my dear ol' dad sold the paper to our competition for a cool 1$million, instead of selling to me for half that amount, per our VERBAL agreement.

Moral of the story - get it in writing! ESPECIALLY with family business - let my story be a warning to you all...

So, I answer an ad out of the blue, and this is the result - not only am i working for a great family company - Cowles Publishing is owned by a brother and sister who did not get fragged by their dad - they also happen to own Weyerhauser Paper, the L.A. Times, the Boston Herald, the Chicago Cubs....nice company perks!

They say that the rookie agent record for first year sales is $126,000. sounds like a good goal to me! Not only am I working for a company that the folk I am going to be talking to are familiar with, but every single one of my potential customers has also recieved OUR family's paper over the last 25 years, as well. Talk about a foot in the door, I've got two the size of Bozo's in with all that. I expect to do well.....

AND, I have met someone as well, and am still breathless at the pace with which things have developed.....am flying down to florida on mar 20 to drive kathleen and her daughter paige up here to montana. she is in the airforce, and will have 14 years in come May. The website in my signature is her website, and since a picture is worth a thousand words... take a look for yourself, those who have not already...never say never, lolol.

AND, I am moving this next month into a friend's house, in preparation for buying a house for amanda and I. - yes, - amanda and I. not going to be shacking up, no matter how discombobulated this woman makes my brain, I already did it the wrong way already with amanda's mom. not again. we will have seperate residences until we know we are right for each other, and not just caught up in a bunch of vision-clouding first-meeting pheremones. that said, I have never felt like this about anyone...ever.

I will try not to be to much of a casper around here, but I am still in the process of the grieving steps for my grandmother who died last week as well, on top of everything else. I have no store bought or machine made blankets, every one is one of my grandma's quilts, and it is nice to have such solid remembrances, but now that she is gone, those things can be a double-edged sword.....

Other than that, there has not been much going on in my life in the last month...

Way to go JJ, You can learn golf, you got to look at it as an excuse to drink beer.

WOW! JJ, things are really moving for you!
Really sorry to hear about your grandmother though - and I'm sure her quilts will in time be a real comfort to you again.

Good luck with everything!

update- I passed the tests, say hi to the newest agent for farmer-stockman!

the thought of going in and giving my notice to the place i have been for the last year is utterly delicious; however, I have decided on the dignified thing, so I will type up a nice letter of resignation, thanking them for the opportunity to work there, to go WITH the giant rasberry and mooning!!LOLOLOL, after all, a person should always display a correct grasp of polite manners, right?

still moving this month, got the job, hmmmm...let me see.......
OH YEAH! "two out of three ain't bad" - Meatloaf

I am not flying down to florida, in march or any other time. After a 'time and space' letter - you know the one, need more time alone and more space as an individual, I have decided that is an excellent idea for me as well. I am just going to concentrate on being Amanda's Dad, which is still the best damn job there is, and work at my new career, I am under no illusion as to just how high the bar is on that rookie agent record....how appropo, valentines week is when i start, guess I'll save my heart for that which will be truly best for me and will give back as well - Amanda, and work. So, now that the sheer terror of chiseling the rust off my book-learnin' study thinker that has been collecting since Ronald Reagan was still president is over (can't believe it still worked! , time to press on, into the brighter horizon glimmering ever closer...JJ
