how does the mage learn new spells?

My mage has 2 spots open in second level spells but doesn't have any known. How does he get to know spells?

Find a scroll , open it and read it. If your unlucky you might fail, but any mage with a decent INT score should be able to learn a level 2 spell.

In it is a mage that sells spells

thanks, I thought new spells would just appear with levels. That was driving me nutz. I didn't get an instruction booklet with the game.

Be sure to visit Orrick's tower regularly as you adventure. His inventory will eventually change as your party advances through the game and gains levels -- at a certain point in the game he will add a number of higher level spells to what he has available for purchase.
