Dramnek/Eisen please don't spam this discussion thread. We have been over and over your ridiculous prattle about the US suppling arms to Iraq 30-40 years ago, we are currently discussing the present situation. Thank you.

MagiK, Don't you think that ws a bit uncalled for? Don't just tell the dude he's wrong, Show him he's wrong. I for one would like to see the evidance that the US hasn't give arms to Iraq too.

You may need to join the higher levels of government for proof of anything along these lines. Maybe E could provide us with proof of it that can't be questioned?

Of course, that's considering you're talking about the 90's and beyond. There's no question that the US was a friend and ally to Iraq in the 80's in order to ally ourselves against Iran.

The bulk of Iraq's current weaponry is Soviet made. The equipment comes directly from the old Soviet Union, modified versions of same equipment comes from China. Iraq has done their own mods.

They also have a small amount of French made equipment. The very tiny amount of US made stuff is either soooo old, or small arms and MANPADs (Contra).

There is little doubt that Americans, and all other major powers, have supplied arms in alliances that would eventually turn against them. The reverse happens too: West Germany right after said state was militarized.

I believe that the Americans still can easily defend Taiwan. In a land-based war, American forces, though of course some of the best in the world, would be in trouble because of the sheer number of adversaries (a Chinese army of over 1 million). However, since it's on sea, two battle groups, IMHO, could control the Taiwan strait, and stop the Chinese from going anywhere.

Whether it should be defended is another member. America has never formally acknowledged the existance of another state...they've bought the products, and have set up relations, but have never acknowledged the independance of Taiwan. On the other hand, incursions into democratic countries in the Orient would set a very bad precedent, especially when we consider China's neighbour, North Korea. It is a very sticky situation, one that is not easily solved. My personal vote would be to defend Taiwan. The consequences in North Korea, IMHO, are just too great.

Moose makes a good point.

Has the US or UN ever recognized Taiwan as an independent nation? Either would suffice.

I said in my post that I'm talking per Gulf. Afterward both our nations were giving them weapons for free almost every week.
But a third party could of shipped US,UK or others weapon to Iraq, talking the black market here.

Please read what I said again and more carefully. I said "We have been over and over your ridiculous prattle about the US suppling arms to Iraq 30-40 years ago, we are currently discussing the present situation." I did not deny that we supplied Iraq with arms several decades ago and those arms were used up in the war with IRAN that you don't seem to recall. In 1990 the coalition forces were fighting an Iraqi army armed with AK47's AK74's, T72 and T60 tanks and MIG and SU aircraft. so please let the ancient history go and get with the current issue...to which THIS particular thread is oriented. I do not want to discuss the Ottoman empire here either. You could start your OWN thread if you want to address other issues. Thank you for staying on topic

Oh yes the 1990 Iraqi Army was also armed with some Chinese equipment too....no F16's or Stinger missiles were used against the US forces in the 1990's

EDIT: In answer to your very first question, no it is not UNCALLED for to request that people do not take the thread off topic.

Calling other member's posts "ridiculous prattle" is what I would considered uncalled for, MagiK. It's not what you say, it's how you say it.
