The Wings have also made some decent goalies look soft (Vanbiesbrouck), so it doesn't go all one way. Besides, Kipper and Giguere already had a series under their respective belts before beating the Wings - my position is that they were already on the way up. A good defence (and a little luck) generally beats a good offence, and when the Wings got beat, both teams were trapping; in the Flames' case, they were hitting, too.
Anyway, the Achilles heel of the Wings won't be goaltending, it will be injuries/fatigue on the back end. I have a lot of respect for Chelios, Lidstrom, Schneider, and Co, but they are aging. They will have a tough time getting through three Western Conference series with enough gas left in the tank. It's all about the forecheck, and every team in the league knows that the only way to beat Detroit is to grind it out.

Rollie is the Oilers brick wall. Our playoff hopes depend on him. So rather than Go Oilers! it should be Go Rollie!

Giguere beat the Wings in the first round. A sweep if I'm not mistaken.
The thing about the Wings is they have some decent defensive depth, with young kids. Kronwall in particular has stood out to me. Lidstrom can easily handle a huge amount of minutes per game - the only defenceman on the Wings I've ever had doubts about this year is Chelios. I think he's lost his physical edge, and it's starting to put doubts in his mind which are leading to poor decisions. That or his off-season bobsleigh training The Flames have played nowhere near where they should. Yesterday, they probably played 10 intense minutes, and if there were 30 more seconds in that game, it was probably going to OT. I don't really understand why, when this teams hallmark was consistent effort, you don't see any out of this group. I think the combined expectations and pressure of starting at home knocked them slightly off-kilter - heck, Iginla played 2 post-season games in his career before last season's run, never as a favorite. Now, Sutter has a more receptive audience and the pressure's off the Flames a little, with everyone singing the praises of the Ducks. I don't know if they'll win both games in Anaheim, but even if they don't, expect those games to be brutally intense.

Another double OT game. Could this series get any better?

Avalanche fan, and oooh boy I am loving it right now!
Hopefully they be consistent and win. Their scoring barrages can be paired with defensive lapses... |

Calgary will win the cup this year.
2. Carolina Hurricanes vs. 7. Montreal Canadiens 2-0 ??? I think this one is 0-2, Montreal will win this one. [ 04-26-2006, 02:17 PM: Message edited by: pritchke ] |

Man, I did *NOT* need a double OT game last night! I had a plane to catch at 7AM this morning, which meant getting up around 5:30... just 3-1/2 hours after I went to bed!
Frustration. That's all I can say. I'll be watching on Thursday after Survivor. Grrrrr

Wings tied up, Ducks tied up. The big surprises for me this year are the Rangers (having made the 3rd seed, now down 3-0) and the Stars.
I think an Eastern Conference team wins the Cup this year, because all four West series are more physical than anything out east (exception: Buffalo-Philly). The West will only get more intense.
