Israel has assassinated a Palestinian regarded as the leading planner of Islamic suicide bombers in what the military proclaimed an intelligence victory.

Israeli troops killed Islamic Jihad military leader Iyad Sawalha on early Saturday in the northern West Bank city of Jenin. Military sources said a unit from the elite Golani brigade found Sawalha and his wife in a cave underneath a house.

Sawalah reportedly fired his weapon and hurled a grenade. The Israeli force then cut him down in a hail of gunfire.

The 28-year-old Sawalha, known as 'the engineer', was being held responsible for the deaths of at least 31 Israelis. He planned a series of suicide bombings over the last four months in Israel, Middle East Newsline reported.
Sawalha also helped plan suicide attacks by the ruling Fatah movement, led by Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat. Arafat condemned the Israeli killing of Sawalha as a "crime."

The latest bombing was near the Israeli town of Karkour last month when a car filled with explosives rammed into a passenger bus. Seventeen people were killed.

Military sources said Sawalha was the target of an intense manhunt for the last 16 days. They said the discovery of Sawalha was a major intelligence success.

Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said Sawalha had planned to launch a series of suicide missions in Israel over the next few days. Officials said Israeli authorities have received an alert of up to 50 suicide attacks against Israel.

Its seems like for every suicide bomber mastermind they gun down, three more crop up. Is that why they call it a vicious circle?

It’s a pity he had to die, since the Suicide bombers do commit crimes against humanity, And more such people need to be brought to justice.
But Alas, I suppose if he’s armed there’s nothing you can do but kill him, before he kills more innocents.

I don't think the Israeli's take prisoners to begin with, they only execute.

The Israeli's assisted that guy in dying a martyr and assured his place in heaven. Im sure he could have asked for no greater honor. It is after all what he was telling his recruits.

Hey Chewie, if you keep at it, you weed out the smart ones leaving less and less capable people to take his place, eventually they become inneffectual. Believe it or not, the average person is not all that bright. Get rid of the smart ones and all you got left is easier to catch yokels. Sort of like reverse eugenics.

The reverse may apply for both sides. The more people you can get to hate you at an early age, the more leaders as well as followers rise to the occassion of hatred as they grow up.
Also It doesn't take many brains to use a machine gun or make a gas bomb. Especially if you have trained since kindergarten to do so.

My opinion: It won't be violence that solves any problems over there.

Besides, blowing each other up back and forth leads to more blowing each other up back and forth. It's simple logical cause and effect. If a person can't think up and act upon an alternative to violence, they are caught in the vicious cycle.
