In English, I actually choose Mary Kelly's "Frankenstein" thinking it would be cool! It sucked, and bad! I know she is classic, but late 19th century writing is just not for me, personally.
After hearing a report from one of my friends in English class did on "The Lord of the Flies", I thought, "I'd like to read that." It took me almost 10 years, but once I got it from the library I thought it was great! I also enjoyed the works of Jules Verne(an exception to the above mentioned thought). BTW, I'm sure I spelled everything wrong... [ 11-14-2001: Message edited by: Ronn_Bman ]

Donald you posted this anyway, after I told you there were plenty of school books out there that weren't about racism? Shame on you! Some of the ones i've read were Alas Babylon, the entire Drow Elf Trilogy, the Icewindale Trilogy, The Bean Trees, (Alright Bean Trees doesn't really count, Miss. Goodman was a horrible teacher.) Les Miserables, and Lord of the Flies.

quote: how is the 3rd book in the dark elf trilogy not about racism? in fact many of his journal outtakes address that very issue, how a few select individuals were able to look past racist views and give him a chance, thereby either saving him completely(life and sanity(sorry, that was in sojourn)), or making a huge impact in his world view...

quote: Ahhhhh, classic book that, I'm English so I don't really get when 9th grade is (is it about age 15?????) but I remember reading that and Lord of the Rings for the first time in year 4 or 5, though I dunno if that'll mean anything to you. Still, great set of books that, another author I like is David Eddings. [ 11-15-2001: Message edited by: Talthyr Malkaviel ]
