Hello! I'm planning on getting a new video card to replace my old one. I have a GeForce 2 GTS pro with 64mb ddr rams, and i want to get something like GeForce 4 Ti 4200 so i can play Unreal 2 (which i'm planning to get on Feb 4th). I can't help but to notice that ATI also has the Radeon 8500LE with 64mb ddr rams released....is this like a watered-down version of the original Radeon 8500? It's pricing is also seductive too...at one third the price of GeForce 4 TI 4200...which video card should i consider?
In case you guys are wondering...i have a P-4 1.4Ghz machine together with 512mb of RDRAMS...do i need an upgrade?

I would go for the Geforce 4 cos I like the geforce series. But the Radeon is probably the better option.
As for the rest of your system, you have more than 5 times the power I do, so I would say you dont need an upgrade.

As far as I know Radeon cards are better than GeForce cards if you consider the hardware specifications. But the drivers to Radeon are terrible, whereas the software for Geforce cards are excellent. Therefore geforce cards tend to run a lot better that Radeon cards.
Andrewas, please correct me if I´m wrong.

The Geforce 4 Ti 4200 is a 128mb one isn't it? The Geforce would probably be the better choice, more supported and faster.

Out of these, GF4 is faster, but Radeon 9700 is the fastest card at the moment. I don´t think you really need an upgrade either.

A Professional oppinion, maybe, maybe not
if all you have to worry about is running that one game, then far from needing an upgrade, your current system is more than adequate to run it and some overkill besides although your graphics card will handle the game and run it quite effectively i would actually advise you not to buy a geforce 4 just yet,,,,,, although geforce as mentioned before are the more heavily supported card,,, the geforce 4 has not yet come into its own, top of the fps ratings at the mo you will find the max out version of the geforce 3, which your anything like me ,,,,,, is outta your price range at around 300 GB pounds (last time i looked) but that is what is topping off on the best performances the geforce 4 will outperform this in time with better releases than the current ones, but as yet does not, so, my advice is to stick with what you have until the geforce 4 comes out,,, then spend a fortune on an expensive geforce 4 when they are in the top of the ratings for fps, who needs a house as long as you can afford the best graphics card on the market huh ,,, lolol anyway ,, end ........

Does anyone here owns the ATI Radeon 8500LE one? Cause the price is really attractive. They're only selling it at $150CA here whereas they're selling the GeForce 4 one for $350CA. I heard that the ATI 8500 one is better than the Geforce 3 550 until the GeForce 4 series is out and beat the crap out of it.
Both the GeForce 4 and ATI radeon have 128mb of ddr...if i remember correctly... Also, the reason that i needed an upgrade is DOOM III, i think that by the time it's out, almost everyone needs an upgrade.

And what card *wont* the geforce FX outperform. Seriously powerful card that. Planning on getting me one to go with my new Nforce2 motherboard that I need to get round to ordering.

I suggest that you go to the following 3 sights and do a search on each one concerning your inquiry:
Resellerratings.com - absolutely phenomenol forums with people who know what they are talking about. Plus, it gives you superb customer reviews on the tons of online computer retailers, etc. Tomshardware.com - some say he is a bit biased on certain items, but it is another excellent sight for your hardware questions. AnandTech.com - same as above. * I personally think that if you are going to upgrade go for the 128mb card. if you can wait, the latest cards should be coming down in price because as has already been mentioned the new Nvidia's are out. |
