My character is currently a assasin. Why does he only gain one hp pr level?
He has exceeded the level he was in all the other clases. I do save before leveling, so that when i only get the one hp i reloade, but after 20-25 reloads i tend to give up. Is this a bug or what? and can anything be done about it? Edit: He is an elve, might have somthing to do with it. [ 11-08-2003, 05:50 AM: Message edited by: ZaRos ]

He is at lvl 22, and leveling fast.
He got 24 in fortitude, and as of now he got 174 hp.

No it's not a bug, it's a feature of the AD&D rules. Every level up is a thrown dice with modifications. Radek has made an excellent explanation of this phenomena. I hope he has posted it in the Best tip thread. If he hasn't you will have to wait until he gets here and can re-post his explanation.

Or try doing a search for threads on this topic, there have been MANY!
This is perfectly normal and eventually it does all work out but every poster on this forum will agree that there were better ways to manage this and many players have wasted too much time reloading their games trying to beat that 1HP increase. Reloading and trying again can actually just prolong the agony. Your characters will develop in such a way that is in keeping with the game as you progress through it, so don't worry about these 1 HP increases! Wyv |

If you are playing the game unpatched you can also exploit the toughen bug to gain unlimited hit points.

I know Radek has explained it well... here's the basic summary.
Every time you level up, your HP are re-rolled for that class at that level. If the new roll is more than your current total, then you get the new roll as your total HP. If the new roll is less than or equal to your current HP, you get 1 HP. So if you were a 20th level barbarian, with more HP per level, and then switched to a warlock, with fewer HP per level, you'd be gaining one point per level until you are way, way up there. You might get an occasional multi-point boost, but rarely. And that's why we say it evens out, and it's not worth reloading to try levelling up again. It all works out in the end... as you're seeing now.

*sigh* There are patches for this game? Damn, I seem to have missed everything that has happened to this game. Where can I get them?

There is only one patch. The patch can be downloaded here at Ironworks. The effects of the patch are explained by Sazerac on page four of the Best Tips thread and by Bungleau on page eight of the same thread.
I, personally, do not recommend the patch. The few irritating glithes that it fixes are not a big problem, and the benign bugs that can be exploited without the patch far outweigh the negative sides.

Bungleu has explained the phenomenon. Now, it should be clear what's happening.
174 HP is too much for an assassin at level 22. Every time you level up, your HP are rerolled from scratch (for examle at level 23, the game rolls assassin's HP 23 times and adds the results together) and because you have too much HP, the rolled number of HP is almost always less than your current number of HP. Therefore, you get 1 HP during leveling up. Suppose now that you are getting 1 HP all the time up to level 38. That's 16 levels, you will have 190 HP and level 38. It's time to score some successes during leveling up: the average HP per level for an assassin is higher than 5 so that the "roll from scratch" method should give more HP than your current number of HP sometimes. Therefore, you get more than 1 HP during leveling up. Notes: 1. Every HP boost in the game is worthless. Well, you get some HP now but it means that you will get 1 HP per level later - until the boost vanishes. Therefore, ignore your HP and concentrate on your ability points. When all your stats become 18 or more, stop "controlling" your levels up (except for training opporunities, of course). It's no use. 2. The "roll from scratch" system implemented in the game behaves the following way: a) You will get 1 HP per level until your HP are much lower than they should be. b) Then you will get bags of HP suddenly - for example 70 HP or even more. Your number of HP will correspond to your level much better now. c) Go to a) In the other words, your number of HP is usually lower than it should be. When the number of HP becomes unbearable, you get a "bolus". Then your number of HP starts lagging behind your level again. Then you get another "bolus". And so on. Oh, well...
