What I mean is sometimes when one of my characters die his/her hit points will go to, for example, -10/97 instead of 0/97 without suffering an explosive death. I've noticed that happens when a character who is low on hitpoints, for example 5, and a baddie casts a fire spell. I know raise dead won't work when that happens and I was just wondering if ressurection would work.

It should work on any character who is not an elf. In the paper & pencil game elves live for 1500 years I guess they figure you dont really need a second chance LOL
