Let's see. Harry Potter is making three movies, so is LotR, but the Harry Potter gang holds several advantages over the LotR bunch:
 • First, their audiance is nearly 3x as wide as the LotR (HP is PG? and LotR is PG13 and maybe R)
 • Nearly anyone can go to see the movie and understand its components, whereas the LotR movie is aimed at those who know and understand the Forgotten Realms campaigning system (well, most)
On the brighter side, LotR possesses some of its own inner qualities:
 • The movies are released close to a month afterwards, leaving them with the option to spruce up some parts for a possible nomination
 • Many of the actors/actresses are professional, whereas the Harry Potter series is mostly fresh faces (I'm assuming)
 • Filming locations are 10x better than a half-animated British castle
My point. Should whoever the director/producer is/are consider filming the Hobbit? I think it would be excellent for several reasons (third time already, sheesh):
 • It would be more like the Star Wars series, which is one of the all time best series of any sci-fi production
 • It would bring in more money (hopefully)
 • Compared to HP, it would grant the LotR folk one more movie to outlast them (all )

I voted yes, and let me tell you why. Since the Hobbit is a children's book, I think it will help give kids who are too young for LotR to see what Tolkien was all about. If done correctly, it could easily be rated PG and be viewable for younger audiences. A good thing, in my opinion. Maybe it will get these kids to pick up the books and discover the joys of reading! Of course, I'm still trying to decide whether I liked the LotR movie or not, so maybe I'm not the right person to ask.

I don't think LOTR is aimed at those who know the FR campaigning system. It's aimed at those who've read and like Tolkiens books, and at those who've always wanted to read them but thought 1200+ pages was too much. LOTR dates from a time before Dungeons & Dragons (yes, there was such a time, long ago). I'm not surprised if many D&D players also like the LOTR books, but they wouldn't fit the definition of target audience.
And I might have this completely wrong, but I thought there were going to be seven HP movies?

But of course we want to see The Hobbit, and we want Peter Jackson on the job

I too fail to say the relation between LotR and FR !

LotR was written in the fifties (like in 1950). It predates the first D&D setting by 30 years and the FR campaigning by even more. Furthermore, the Roleplaying system based on the world of Tolkien is MERP (Middle Earth Roleplaying), which evolved into Rolemaster.

I'd love to see The Hobbit redone. I own the animated movie, but would like to see live-action quite a bit.

p.s. Yes, Tolkien published LOTR in 1954, and The Hobbit was done in 1937. I believe most people mistake FR for LOTR because D&D was so incredibly influenced by LOTR.
Wasn't FR based off of Tolkien's novels? That's what I was getting at.

Dungeons and Dragons was heavily influenced by the Tolkien books, yes (probably along with many other sources). FR was later developed as a part of D&D.... so there was probably some influence, yes.

Personally I like the hobbit better than LOTR. Its such a great little story. and I bet the giant war at the end, and the Dragon would so amazing done in the LOTR style of realism.
