Hmmm.... the one that keeps zapping me is Huntfly.com. It just comes from nowhere.

LegoLASS If you weren't so damned funny, you'd get more.
Well, Spybot zapped a lot, but then I rebooted and got a GATOR Corp. popup without turning on IE. I don't have time before I leave in 1 hr. to fully learn Spybot and crank up the settings so it will check more thoroughly. Ooops, there's another one -- damn. So, what I did was call our IT guys and say something like "I have this problem, it's wasted hours, I want it fixed tonight after I leave, and I am pissed." When in doubt, bark at the techies. My job tasks today ALL involved online research. Between fiddling with the popups and downloading stuff to fix them, I've lost 1/2 my day. And, Timber no surfee the porn at work. And, at home is dial-up, so you can bet I don't do it there. |

Whether or not popup stopper software causes you a problem depends on the logic it uses. Popup killer blocks based on the URL or on the title. I have never had a problem with IW polls, and I run it all the time.
I have accidentally added a valid URL to the blacklist. All I had to do was to find it and remove it. And if it gets really frustrating, I just disable it temporarily. But TL, you might consider running both Spybot and Ad-Aware. Each of them is a 90-95% solution, and between them both, they've got it just about all covered.

Yea, Trojans are a pain though. I've only had them infect me twice in the last 4 years, but I don't think they ever crashed my Pc though. The most damage they ever did was damage a game file, which I just reinstalled later on. Or the reason behind those pop-ups could be the simplest of Pop-Up rules; "Close me and more will come." If you have a trojan when you're on dial up, you have a serious problem. Trojans connect your PC to the internet while you're away from home. Most trojans keep trying to do that every few minutes, if you're not around to cancel the action, you're phonebill will give you a major headache.

Go to add/remove programs and remove any unfamiliar software plug-ins. You may have to come up in safe mode or kill the processes before some will be removable. This will only work on legit plug-ins that most people inadvertently load from the net. There are plenty of nasty ones out there that aren't that easy! Also check to make sure your default home page hasn't been changed. You may also want to confirm your AV software and windows update software are working correctly. Some nasty trojans knock those out to prevent you from protecting yourself. If they've been compromised, you've got a mess on your hands and I'd let IT handle it. If so, be prepared for a scolding.
