Well this might be the opportune moment to inform you that in spite of our differences, I have high regard and respect for you, like your posting style, your wit, your obvious intelligence and your pure entertainment value.

I enjoy reading your contributions. Cheers and salutations.

But don't let this go to your head....
[/QUOTE]Head? It's full of felt.

But, I hope this is only another temporary sabbatical, Y-man. I hope to see you again -- else few are left to pick up the banner for your cause. And, that would be a shame. We are all benefitted by hearing views in opposition to our own.

Two sad losses - I'll miss you both. I wanted to take you to task for your mangling of the laws of thermodynamics TL, but that will have to wait now. I'll catch up with you later Egg-man.

Very different; we didn't stage massive protests.

2.The higher standard placed on American democracy if it is held as a barometre of international democracy, and if it's leaders are going to publicly call into question another nations democratic processes.

I don't think there is a higher standard placed on us, only the same standard applied to every other nation. I doubt our leaders will call into question the Ukranian vote, because it really isn't any of our business.

3.The similarity of the Ukrainian seceding threats and prospect of resultant civil war to the US civil war and southern states secession.

No similarity. The US Civil War was about state's rights and economic concerns, not an election.

4.Why it seems so few Americans seem concerned with the Ukrainian situation. Is it the US media?

So few of my fellow citizens care because the vote there doesn't impact their daily life. Most of them don't know where it is, anyway. The media is covering the issue, but it isn't a "headline grabber".

5.Is President Bush being hypocritical or not, in commenting in the Ukrainian election.

No.

Interesting article, I'm glad to see the USA is helping in orginizing non-violent demonstrations and peaceful civil protests instead of sending weapons and troops.

Agreed! Historically empires have uesd a number of tools to achieve their aims. Force of arms is usually the last resort.

Can anyone imagine themselves marching on washington in 2000 shouting 'instate Gore or cival war'

Unless of course they could see into the future

even though the reality makes me sick, Bushes win in 04 gives him some form of legitimacy to start using the 'democracy' line without blushing

Hopefully the USA will see the results of rigged elections overseas and will move in a serious bi partisan effort to make sure that it never happens (again) in the future.
