A simple poll- here is the premise.

Since the dawn of time, since man first crawled out of the swamps he has from time to time over the centuries used torture on his fellow man in an attempt to gain information. No doubt there have been other reasons that torture has been used but in this instance we are only concerned with the use of torture to gain reliable information.

The poll "question" is actually a statement- the answers should reflect whether you see the statement as obvioulsy either true or false or impossible to judge as either.

Doesn't this strike you as a slightly odd question to ask?

It does indeed - the truth is its from another discussion on another board and any further explaination may be contrued as an attempt on my part to skew the results...

I ask that people simply take the statement as worded and reply accordingly.

Yep, odd wording, but obviously some important information must have been aquired through torture at some point in the history of man. I can't tell how effective it is, though.

Besides, is there some background story to this question?

Here's the poop... the original discussion began at Tarnas where I took exception to the inference that the statement I have now listed in 3 seperate polls (Here, Tarnas and Sorcerors) MUST be considered as true absent any evidence posted to the contrary.

I maintain that its ridiculous on its face and needs no "evidence" to say so and any reasonable discussion on the topic of torture should begin by removing such blatant overstatements from the table. The fellow holding the view declined to do so and things mostly went down hill from there...

To any newcomers to this thread please read the statement and vote as you see it.
