im playing as a sorceror actually, and it is by far the best class i have played in the game. once you get a few levels, your familiar (in my case, a panther) gets to be pretty powerful. i let my panther and henchman do all the work, and i use a bow. then, i summon whatever i have available, and later on, i summon POWERFUL creatures. then i stoneskin and haste myself and all my henchmen/summons. its fairly easy this way actually. no to mention the fact that while the enemy is engaged with my melee fighters, im launching fireballs, ice storms, cloudkills, and horrid wiltings until they fall down and die. then, if i MUST go to melee, i just cast haste, greater-stoneskin, and tensers transformation, and im nearly unstopable in a melee battle, heh. definately a sorceror, they just ROCK!!! after i beat the game with him, i will build a warrior class to play. maybe ill finish it with an elven fighter or ranger. we'll have to see i guess, heh.

I just want to voice my opinions on the merits of the wizard. Having such variety in their spells and the fact that they get higher level spells before the sorceror makes them the better choice IMHO. Also i find having a high intelligance is more useful than a high charisma. However i rarely talk sense so if you belive me you need to be VERY careful. Lord knows i rarely belive myself these days.....

Intelligence gets you extra skill points. This can be handy, but there's only so many skills that you actually can use.

The extra charisma from the sorcerer will help with the persuade skill, but the extra intelligence from the wizard gives you more skill points, which can be used to up your persuade skill sooner.

I posted a poll asking this same exact question earlier this month, and the sorcerer won out. I started playing both to test them out, and sided with the sorcerer. There are only certain spells that you will use repeatedly, and a sorcerer can use scrolls just like a wizard can. I am playing the sorcerer now, and I keep EVERY scroll I find. This gives me those extra spells I need for those special occasions. And you can let loose lots more spells than the wizard. The lower skill points do hurt some, but not enough to make too much difference.

All in all, it's your choice. But I was a die-hard wizard fan in PnP, and now I have grown to love sorcerers in this game.

Okay, I don't have time and you probably don't either.

SORCERERS ARE SHIT! use them if you have a large party and plenty of buffer. But for solos, make it easier and go for a all rounder Wizard. If you wnat to multiclass to balance out your weakness go for a sorcerer for the offensive spells. but as a pure class a general wizard RULES!
