Yes, a Swashbuckler/Fighter should be interesting.
Start of with a Swashbuckler, but dont dual him to a Fighter in the earliest levels. Cause if he first is a thief, he should be a good thief. So them maybe dual him in level 14-16. |

Have been playing for a while now with a figther/thief, and so far he beats both Minsc and Keldorn as a "tank". I have given him points in two weapon style and in katana. He's wielding "Celestial Fury" and "Dak'kon's Zerth Blade" and it's working out absolutely flabergasting
He can even spot and disable traps while wearing a full plate.

Thieves actually don't have very good hit points in and of themselves, fighters do get the best hit point totals. If you start out with a human fighter and then dual class him a little later, he will have the benefit of a fighters hit points and the thiefs abilities.

SixOfSpades, you make a good point. If you start him out as a thief while foes are fairly weak, his lower hit points wont be so detrimental. Then once you get his abilities up where you want them and dual to fighter could work well. I haven't tried a thief/fighter combo, but I have enjoyed my thief/mage immensely

I used to play an elven fighter/thief, now though a half-orc fighter/thief is probably the strongest. A straight thief doesnt cut it for powergaming, even a swashbuckler. Swashbucklers get amazing AC and whirlwind, but less attacks and no assassination. Kensai dualed to thief at level 13 gets full attacks, lots of hp, nice proficiencies and will be able to use armour etc with thieves Use Any Item ability, but they are vulnerable until high level, and dont get any fighter high level abilities (whirlwind, hardiness, smite etc).
A multi class fighter/thief is slow to level and stuck at 2 proficiency points in a few chosen weapons. They dont get as many hp as a dualed fighter/thief. Where they rock though is the number of high level abilities they get. Because characters get HLAs everytime they level above 3,000,000 xp, a multi class will get more HLAs than any single, or especially dual char. You get to choose from BOTH fighter and thief. Take a half-orc to take advantage of high end and get around the lower hp problem, and great strength for backstabbing. You wont need any belts of strength later if you play evil. It doesnt matter that the multi fighter/thief is of lower individual levels, as the fighter and thief class dont get many benefits for high levels, just HLAs, and multi beats them all in that department. |

Hmm the assasin fighter dual could make an incredibly powerful backstab.... but the swashbuckler/fighter IMO isnt really that good an idea.. IMO a swashbuckler is more than good enough by himself
