Sounds like you want something a bit darker than FR. Planescape might be worth a look - there is at least one game set there (planescape:torment) and it is very different.

I may be confused here (it happens often) but is there a ravenloft rpg? if so, then try that it sound's like thats what you're looking for.
or you could go for a completely different genre like RIFTS:New West or something but thats not D&D so you might not.

I myself have played V:tm, and while it's ok to play, it is an absolute @%$@$#@ to GM!!! Every single complicated action involves a "GM discretion," mostly so the !$%^% at white-wolf don't have to work to hard on a good battle system. Also, what's with the idea of having to roll a parry, block, or dodge? Should it not be inherent that your char is not going to want to be hit? But no, he wants to stand there and take it like the damnable critter that he is!!!! Anyways, sorry for the rant, back to the subject... er, what was it again?? Oh yeah, as long as your not GMing VTM may be the respite you need.

Sorry for posting this at the SoA forum in the first place!

i heard that call of cthulhu is pretty good maybe because i ve heard a lot about lovecraft...but i think it has a better combat system...like acting like human(fear)when seeing a zombie a not just attack it!
