i've got the shiny metal plate, and the magic polish from croc.. i'm down to two charges left on it.. when i use the last one the metal plate just disappears.. but i'm unable to use the magic polish on it again.. is this gadget only good for the initial charges? do i just need to buy some more polish or am i just stuck without this gadget for the remainder of the game?

Well, I never used that gadget myself. But you may want to try the recharge trick. Save the game. Sell your magic plate, then buy it back. See if the item is now recharged. Some people have done this to recharge mana stones, so it may work here, too. Good luck.
