Comes from a time when it was forbidden to curse using God's name ("God" = "Dieu" in French), so instead of saying "SacreDieu" people said "Sacrebleu".

Thanks for all who wished the USA a happy birthday!!
I celebrated by watching 4 hours on Ben Franklin on PBS. Great stuff. The guy totally ran the vast majority of the financing of the war from Paris. And, since history has forgotten lately, I'll make mention that there would be no America without French aid. True, when it came time for the Treaty of Paris, the USA and France ended up finding they had big differences on interest in negotiating peace with England, but the guns, cannons, boots, and wagons suppplied by France for that long 6-year war kept the effort going. Factiod for your July 4th: Ben Franklin is the only man to have his name on the 3 necessary documents to create the USA as we know it: the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Paris, and the Constitution. |
Ah, I had a suspicion I didn't have it quite right, though I think the way I did it is a popularised mistake. I knew the Dieu meaning God part, but not how it came about. You really do learn something new every day.
