If the British people all hate the Royal family so much, why do they still exist? Is there any movement to get rid of the lot of them? I would think that the money used in the upkeep of royal residences and palaces could better be used for things like teachers salaries and such. Im just curious.

Edit: I know the Royal Navy and Marine types I served with in the 80's all seemed quite dedicated to the Royal family (but this observation also seemed to cause some consternation among the civilian british here on IW)

I would love to get rid of them, and agree that the money could be better used. Most people don't hate them, they just don't care either way. Others have been conned into thinking they are good for tourism, but I reckon people would still eagerly visit to see the places they used to live in. Anyway, we did it once, it can always happen again...

Well that helps me get a better picture of hwo things stand then. Obviously my exposure in the 80's would lead me to believe that "Queen and COuntry" was nearly a universal rally cry, however...I guess the guys with the planes, bombs and guns may have a different view than the average citizen. Well As you said Epona Their homes at least make wonderful tourist attractions

Don't worry, Kaltia. Having several British friends here at IW (you included), "quaint" is definitely NOT one of the adjectives I'd use to describe Britishers.

You'll be glad to know you can keep your ankles
However, this brings up the question...how would you describe us then?

Actually, the Britishers I've met have been pretty much straight folk, just like over here in the states. Maybe with a slightly more twisted sense of humor (but I'm used to talking with Donut, so that's probably why I have that impression. )
