Questions about the Good ol' days of the Forums - Page 4

I lurked on and off on the old blue board between about Sept 00 and Feb 01 when I first posted. Even though I wasn't an active poster for those months, I remember the 'Evil Smiting' and the crashes, which became legendary. I remember lordkymil, but for some reason I never realised he became Memnoch!!!

I think I first posted a couple of weeks after Cloudy, by which time of course she had racked up an impressive number of posts, although I do recall some of her early posts, and her being moaned at (not by Ziroc though) for going off topic! That was in the days before a gen disc. forum, and some people took their BG very seriously indeed.

I first joined as Frejya, made 2 posts on 6 Feb 2001, then rejoined as Epona. I was thinking that I would get a lot of questions asking if I was Scandanavian (Frejya being a Norse goddess), and thought changing my name would make it easier. I didn't realise that Epona was used as a character in Zelda, which I have never played, and that I would get asked questions about that instead! Such are the hazards in naming oneself after a celtic deity.

I originally wanted to be Morrigan (another celtic deity - a crone linked with chaos, and partner of the male Dagda) but with a Moiraine and a Moridin on the board already, I thought it was too similar. Had I picked that, I would no doubt be being asked questions about the Anne Rice 'Mayfair Witches' trilogy in which the name Morrigan crops up as a character. You can't win.

Then in March came the brown board - GD was born, Memnoch became a mod, and we had ranks!

No Scandinavian would use that spelling though Epona!

Hehe! Freja or Freia plain and simple! At least for us Scandinavians.

Names aren´t alway easy eh!

Yes, I agree that the spelling I used was Anglicised(sp?) However, how many people would be able to spot the difference?

I have to admit that when I was first lurking, I thought you were female! For some reason, I kept reading your name as 'WOLFGIRL'. Took me ages to work out my mistake

But my name sounds very Scandinavic when pronounced correctly.

You are not the first one however

Thats why I used the capital letters in my name when the Brown board came up...

Wolfgir is actually a person with a werbsite about helping the environment and how to do good in general for folks, so no harm done!

IMHO too many people have used symbols like wolves in too much of porn, abusive messages, coolfactor, Nazis and rasists..

Thats not what it means to be a wolf. To be a wolf means that you are taking care of thoose that you like, to constantly struggle against all odds. Never give up. And to hunt thoose pesky wabbits!

So thats why I´m posting today here in this old-school forum, even though I´m not posting for awhile/permanently. Though I have a problem to stay away so I will probably be back some time again!

I've been here since December last year. I'm not a prolific poster, not up to 1,000 yet. My style on the board reflects real life. I'm a listener and only say something when I've got something to say or to say something funny (hopefully). I sometimes prod people to get a reaction although this is a lot easier in real life.

I remember Cloudy's arrival on the board. She actually threatened to leave in the first week because people accused her of spamming (difficult to believe about the spamming, I know

) I hadn't realised that Memnoch had only joined the board the month before me, if I'd known I wouldn't have shown him the respect that I did

. Of course I have lost all respect for him in the ensuing 10 months.

I met Yorick when he came to London and I introduced him to the delights of cider. He visited my local pub in Enfield. I also met Davros. He was stopping over in London for one day and I managed to blag a ticket for the Arsenal for him (they are like gold dust). He was also introduced to cider but was unable to hold his drink and proceeded to drop it over my mate's coat.

Typical Aussie.

I remember the migration to the brown board and the deluge of spam that it started. I remember the great schism of the Moon's Hope Inn. I remember the trolls and the flamers, I remember the F*** thread.

Most of all I remember the good people I have met here, those that are still here and those that have left, and the laughs I have had.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh - Nostalgia isn't what it use to be.

I'm one the newer members here at IW, I've only been here since April 2001, I've loved it ever since my first post, all of the people here are wonderful people, nice, caring, considerate and friendly, I started over in the BG2 forum with a few questions because I was stuck, I also started answering a few questions, then I entered the BG2 Bar, the first roleplaying thread I ever visited, there I met Melusine, Lord Shield, Blademaster and other oldies, after a short while, I migrated to the General Discussions forum, though I still visit the BG2 forum sometimes in order to keep the Bar alive and help people who are stuck, here on the GD, I met even MORE nice people, then I knew I'd found a place to call home on the web, I started out slowly, reading much, but posting little, but now I post much more and I'm far more open, much different from the RL me who's the guy who sits in the corner, listening to everything that's said while reading a book and thinking about things, here, I rant, I shout, I act crazy, I love this place, I've never met kinder, friendlier or more considerate people anywhere, both on the web and in RL.

I am not sure when I joined... I first started lurking in October 2000 after I had gotten BG2 and was continually being killed by the trolls in Nalia's keep.

I lurked mostly back then, because my experiences with BB's had not been pleasant --- too many rude people who used their anonymity to be jerks. But I was drawn back again and again by the kindness and patience shown by people like Memnoch, Moiraine, LadyZekke, Stealthy, Tobbin, Wolfgir, The.Relic, LordofAlcohol, Reeka, Cloudy, Armisrael... well, everyone. Then I was hooked by the off-topic discussions. I did post some but was still shy about it.

What struck me the most, and I know I've mentioned this before, was that there were actually women here! And people who were older than 21! Until IW I had thought I was an aberration. Til then, there were no women or adults that I knew who played computer games. It meant a tremendous amount to me to discover this. When I found out Moiraine was a woman ... well.. I was so pleased!

I admit I got hooked by the Spam-fest that began when we moved here. I went from posting almost never, to becoming quite addicted to it. Like Donut, I remember the controversies.. I was one of those involved at Moon's Hope Inn for instance. But I have not left yet despite all of that. I am back to mostly lurking tho ... and I miss many of those who have left. Hard to believe it's been a year.

Probly more than you wanted to know.

Well, I started last week. I can still remember my first thread. It was a good one named "Newbie Post". Those were the days. I was warmly welcomed and a few days later, welcomed into a clan called HADB (may their Saturdays be long and their Mondays be short). I had my sig created by Sazerac and I jumped into hundreds of conversations to distribute my two cents. Since then, I've overcome my Iron Works prepubescence and have blossomed into a ripe board member. I don't stand amongst the veterans but I'm not quite as new as I once was.
