The wild magic is actually more something for TOB. If you just play BG2 without cheats you won't encounter any wild magic, so you shouldn't worry about it.
As for the type of mage, I think you should use either the sorcerer, conjurer or the plain mage. The reason people think the conjurer is that good is that conjurers have an additional spell compared to the normal mage, and in return can cast every spell except divinition type spells. As Memnoch said, people think divinition is the worst school in the game, so compared to other specialized magi you'd have a real bargain. If you do want to cast divinition spells, you'd better pick the 'normal' mage, as that would enable you to cast all types of spell (although it would cost you the bonus slot). Should you prefer to be able to cast a smaller amount of spells without having to memorize you should pick the sorcerer (As you may or may not know, sorcerers can cast a set amount of spells per day, which increases with the caster's level.) A sorceror's main drawback is thefact that he can't learn spells from scrolls, which means you'll encounter lots of virtually useless items, unless you bring another mage to write them in his book. You can, ofcourse, cast from these scrolls. (You should know that I've only played with a mage in BG1 and tried the BG2 sorcerer through the first chapter, so I didn't get that much experience. I decided to reply anyway, as few people gave a reason for their choice. Thats great thanks Legolas, but does a mage get access to necromantic spells?
Also, is it worth playing a necromancer, or will a necromancer be a limited form of a mage? and does anyone know anything about kits? PS: Totallu unrelated, but if anyone else ois a HOMM3 fan, HOMM4 screenshots are available now.... |

A mage can learn Necromantic spells by writing them in their spellbook from scrolls, just like any other wizard except for the sorcerer. So yes, a mage can get acces to necromantic spells.
The difference between a necromancer and a mage is that a necromancer can memorize more spells, and therefore cast more spells per day, but cannot use illusion spells. Wether or not that's worth it is up to you to decide. As for kits, each class from BG1 (fighter, ranger, paladin, cleric, druid, bard, thief and mage) now has kits to chose from, but magi already had kits in BG1, which are the schools. So the conjurer, necromancer etc. are the kits for the mage. The sorcerer is the only new kit for the magi in BG2. ------------------ The last arrow of Legolas kindled in the air as it flew, and plunged burning into the heart of a great wolf-chieftain. depends if u want fun or a challenge. for fun, id say bard cuz of the abilities (and ive heard a good stronghold too). if u want a challenge, the WS, Beastmaster, and any druid class is a challenge.
