Does any of you guys know something about the WSDC (World Schools Debating Championships)? I was wondering about that, so please answer the question.

In the foul darkness one figure will emerge to save the world from evil and despair.... Light flashes as his sword comes down, and thunder rolls through the sky when he points his sword up to heaven to signal his victory....People whisper his name as he walks by, evil tries to hide as they sense his presence nearby.... His name? Link......

Ok. WSDC, or World Schools Debating Championships is an annual tournament for debaters from all over the world, max. aged 18. The WSDC is held in places all over the world (for instance, this year it was held in Johannesburg SA, and next year it will be held in Singapore). Every year countries from all over the worlds send teams to the WSDC, and usually the debaters which have English as normal language end up high. It's supercool (i've been to SA) and you learn a lot.

Interesting, so they are just given topics to debate about or does one team bring a topic up and the other responds. Also who won in Johannesburg.

There's a team that makes up the motions. They're mostly about some worldly problems or something like that. I can give you a couple of examples:
This House disapproves of cloning
This House would waive the patent rights for AIDS drugs for underdeveloped countries
This House believes that gay couples should not be allowed to adopt children

When you participate at the WSDC you get four motions before you arrive. These four motions can be prepared at home. The only thing you don't know is whether you're in favor of the motion or not.
There are four more motions which you get an hour before the actual debate. You can think of a possible strategy etc. for an hour, and then you gotta debate. As you can understand that CAN be pretty hard, but in each debate you gotta define the motion (for instance: this house disapproves of cloning. Most people think about cloning vegetables, but you could define cloning as the exactly copying a certain object. This way you can turn the debate into illegal music copying (like Napster), and surprise your opponent).

OK. Hope y'all understand. I have to say this: it's English style debating, so there are three speakers, and one speaker which will give a summary in each team. Throughout the debate you can make a brief poin, asking for more information, or directing at something you believe isn't true. This is called a Point of Information, and is very usefull.
