I am new at Morrowind and so I have a couple of question to come.
Here's the first one:
I escorted a female merchant (Phemenie ??) to Gnar Mook, the little village on the Bittercoast. She promised and gave me a pair of boots of speed. Remembering Baldur's Gate my hero rejoiced and put them on. All went black!! The boots' stats said +100% speed and 100% blindness. Well, the idea of Azaghal, hero of heroes, running around at lightning speed and bumping into things was comical at first, but seemed not at all helpful for my future journey. So I sold the boots. Mistake?

And now the second:
One day when travelling with the merchant we got under attack and she died. My journal said no more than something like "She died. Bad luck." On her corpse I found not only the boots but a magical axe. I reloaded and accompanied her safely to Gnar Mook, but afterwards I thought that it was obviously more rewarding to let her die and loot her corpse, as there is no such things as exp in Morrowind. Another mistake?

to counter the blind effect. you need resistance in magic ( you can easily cast resist magic spell which can be bought from merchants ). anyway, the boot can be useful when you travel from places to places.

she's not an important npc, so don't worry about what happen to her.
NOTE : important npc will have this " doomsday message " box pops up when they die.

1. The trick with the boots consists in the Resist Magicka spell effect. It is said that 50% resistance is enough (my experience says that it is not - a Breton can be blinded repeatedly even if he has inborn 50% resistance). With the magic resistance, you can resist the blindness and run around with lightning speed, at least, for a while.

2. A normal fault of many games. Being evil is often more rewarding than being good. Right, you weren't evil, you had a bad luck but the result is the same.
Let us note how Morrowind teaches us that being good is not a good idea: Many valuable artifacts are available only through slaughter or robbery. Thievery is the preferred method of getting equipment. Spoiling the quest is the best solution sometimes. And so on. Oh, well...

Considering Pemenie was scamming you killing her wouldn't be a bad thing. Also there is the fact that she is a disreputable criminal with a price on her head (though there is no way to collect that price). By killing her you do a favor to society.

I've used the boots on 4 or 5 charactors, all Bretons, and never had more than a little darkening effect: sorta like wearing sunglasses. If its too much for you, you can have an item enchanted to resist magic as a constant effect...

...or just use the options screen to turn up the brightness! I frankly would NEVER play this game without the boots: would be too boring going from place to place.

The only footwear my guys ever use.
