Yes, the rampant commercialism of the holiday gets to pretty much everyone, I'd be willing to bet. I personally don't like it. But I have too many wonderful associations with Christmas to let it get me down for too long...that and I'm able to avoid it for the most part.

Megabot, my family and I do something similar to that. We have no small children in the family any more (the youngest is now 34, LOL!) so we all exchange 1 gift apiece, and something quite small. It's more important in us being together than "gimme gimme get get". So I know exactly where you're coming from.

I will admit, listening to the radio during the season gets me hopping mad sometimes because of the 10 minutes every half-hour of really stupid advertising that keeps getting shoved at us. So if I want to hear any Christmas music, I'll plug in one of my Mannheim Steamroller CD's or Paracelt CD's and enjoy it that way.

My favorite thing to do of the season? Ride around in the evenings and see the Christmas lights.

For quite a while I hated Christmas. Not because of what it represented, but because of personal reasons. My mother died 10 days before Christmas, and my grandfather died 3 days before Christmas. My relatives all live far away -- except for my father, and we don't care for one another. Even during the Christmas holidays that I had a GF, I found myself becoming very depressed and lonely.

Now, however, I have a wonderful wife and a delightful son to enjoy the season with. He is 3 this year, and it's the first year he understands what's going on around him. The joy emanating from him is contagious. The two of them have returned the joy of Christmas to me.

I must admit I'm a bit disconcerted when I start hearing the radio playing Christmas carols the week before Thanksgiving, though. Fun is fun, but there is a limit to just about everything.

I think they get WAAAAAAY ahead of themeselves these days! I saw Christmas stockings and ornaments in a local drugstore BEFORE Halloween (end of October for those who don't have the holiday). It's getting ridiculous. The temp in my office brought in a commercial box of CHRISTMAS COOKIES today! Ugh, can you imagine what they must be made out of to even think they'd be good in a month? And they must have been manufactured several weeks ago to be in the stores already! blech! Think I'll make my own, thanks!

After working in retail for five years I've learnt to hate the christmas holidays with a vengeance; not what they stand for just what they do to people

I don't ask for much but I'm asking all you... Please be respectful to retailers/shop assistants etc... it's their busiest time of year and patience wears thin

The reason I really enjoy Christmas is because I get to spend time with a lot of the extended family from my mother's side. There's nothing like having fun with 40+ people (about a third are younger kids), eating, talking, just having a good time, enjoying each others company... For some reason, the past 6 or so years, I haven't been comfortable receiving presents. I'm always bombarded with the eternal question around this time: "What do you want for Christmas?" I try to tell people that I don't really want anything, but they seem to think that I'll feel left out or something. Giving is far better than receiving, in my opinion.

However, I'd be lying if I didn't say that I enjoy eating a good amount of cheesecake that always seems to be present at these family Christmas gatherings.
