I am not sure what the opposite school to necromancy is either, but if Jan can't do Necromancy, then I will assume that a Necromancer cannot use Illusionist.
I could be very wrong though. (wouldn't be the first time)

quote: You can scribe lvl9 spells but you wont have access to them until Throne of Bhaal (You can cast them directly off the scroll though, Or if you have a high level evil cleric and manage to turn a liche you will gain access to his lvl9 spells). |

The list of opposite schools/restricted schools is avaiable in character generation screen, (specialist mages) for example a conjurer cannot cast divination spells and a diviner cannot cast conjurer spells. necromancy spells are nice so the best school to be specialized in is conjurer in my opinion, really you wont miss too much thing but you gain lots of things

quote: You are right, PeeWee. Only very few people post questions/answers here about SoA without ToB or customized tweaks; I am not one of those few. Yes, the level cap in SoA limits mages to 17th level regardless of intelligence or equipment, which means mages designed for SoA could limit their intelligence to 16 (minimum needed for 8th level spells) but apparently the game will allow you to scribe scrolls of any level regardless of your intelligence (as opposed to pencil-and-paper). The only true limitations, then, are how many spells are allowed to be scribed (based on intelligence) and some pieces of equipment (which grant more spell memorization slots). A maximum-level mage may memorize 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 3, 3, and 2 spells of 1st through 8th level, respectively, without items. The number of spells able to be written into the spellbooks is 11, 14, 18, and all for intelligence scores 16 through 19. These are taken from the SoA manual; I'm not sure how they compare to regular D&D. 9th level spells are available to be memorized and cast only for mages who attain 18th level; this is not possible in SoA. However, they may cast 9th-level spells from scrolls all day long. Edwin is a conjurer; he may not use Divination spells. Imoen may attain 17th level and use 8th-level spells; this cap applies to both Imoen and Edwin, even though Edwin will have more memorization slots due to his specialization and his equipment. Aerie will attain 13th level and may use up to 6th level spells. Did I cover everything? I hope so. By the way, an intelligence score in the game of 16 would be far from mediocre; this equates to about IQ 160 in real life, which has the technical classification of "genius"; this applies to about 1 in 10,000 people (on average). An IQ of 180 is 1 in 3,500,000.

Thanks Azred for that breakdown ( you covered all of it ). Also thanks guys for the input on the specialization part. I remembered I had one scroll but forgot which and had Edwin try to scribe it. The spell didn't show up in his book although he was successful at the scribe. This just threw me off and along with his voice, I had to boot em out. My party's rep was 20 and I'm fine with it being that high.
As for Aerie....*sigh* sonofa*****. Welp, there goes alot of good spells down the drain. Her lvl 7 page is pretty full and has some decent things in it and I was sooo hoping I would see them too, if not at least one from her. I'll keep Imoen now for sure. I like mages and they have their place, but I knew they would give me a headache down the road - well, only a slight disappointment since some of the spells are so scarce. I shouldn't complain cuz I can either get TOB or remove the cap, but being a first timer, I really didn't see it coming. Gonna have to try and get TOB soon. Thanks again guys. And Aerie will get to use her spells one day even if it's thru the incarnation of a male priest/mage named Aerial.
