yes it does work on baldurs gate II and im pretty sure it worked on baldurs gate 1.

I noticed they also make funny comments when you leave them alone for a while. I had to stop a game the other day and thought I hit the spacebar, but didn't. Then, fifteen minutes later, I'm in the next room and I hear, "Do you expect the monsters to come to us?" I let them go and they all had something to say.
