I have encountered a coule of Lich during my travels in Amn and Tethyr. My simple question is; what are they? Could someone tell a soul that is not familiar with the world of faerun?

A lich is the undead form of a powerful mage. Usually a mage who refuses to let death stop his work in magic and transforms himself into a lich so that he can continue his work in the magic arts.
Of course I could be wrong and for all I know a lich could be the D&D version of the gingerbread man... |

You are partially right. A lich is the undead form of a necromancer or other evil wizard. They do this to prolong their "life" so that they can become more powerfull spellcasters and more knowlageble in the magic arts. Some wizards who have an other allignement undergo the same transformation but they are known as archliches.

Memnoch had a post on this topic listing all the abilities and history of the Lich. If you search for it youll find it. The post he put up is only about 2 or 3 weeks old so it shouldnt be too hard to find.
Lich's are very powerful mages of at least 21st level and are obviously evil. They want to gain more power than they could as a mortal so they go through a ritual which only gives them like a 20% chance of survival and if they fail they are utterly destroyed. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/No...ML/004560.html there it is. In my opinion the most informative post ever put on this forum concerning Lichs. its a great read. If Blackisle were to have made Lichs by the book they wouldnt have been able to put them in the game. ------------------ THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!!!!!!!!! |

ToB gave cool new "super character" powers to high level characters I hear, which you get at like level 21 and such...why cant mages turn themselves into Lichs? To me that would be the coolest addition they could possibly have put in.

Probally cause it would be no disadvantage to that form.
