it depends on what you're into, Akira is genereally regarded (myself included) to be one of the best, but you have to watch it a few times before you can understand everything in it (it started as a miniseries in Japan and has about 24 hours of episodes condensed into a 1.5 hour movie) Ghost in the Shell is good, if you like the big robot fighting movies then Evangelion and Gundam wing are good, the Guyver is one of my favorites, as is Record of Lodoss War, Princess Mononoke is great, Bubblegum Crisis Vampire Hunter D and Battle Angel are all very good also.

for Japornimation (adult anime) La Blue Girl is ok, the first two episodes are hard to watch, but have a decent storyline, in the other episodes the animation improves at the cost of storyline

I liked Akira alot too. I also like Gundam Wing.

One series I also liked alot was Coboy Be-Bop. Sad ending though, kinda predictable too. :|
Real good though IMHO. Its action based, with some comedy.

I'm gonna catch Ghost in the Shell here pretty soon. Next time I can rent it. I've heard really good things.

However you must consider I've only delved into anime about a year ago, so I don't have THAT much experience.

If you want to know about anime, do what uss said. Ask /)eathkiller. He will tell you ANYTHING you need to know.

Akira is good, but check out some of the other movie titles like Sprigun, Ghost in the Shell and Jin Roh as well.

Akira was ok, as was Ghost in the Shell. Princess Mononoke was mentioned by Morgeruat, but Miyazaki Hayao kind of ripped himself off with that one... See Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind (also known as Warriors of the Wind) instead. It is great. Also try Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbour Totoro). Grave of the Fireflies was pretty good.
I liked Cat Girl Nuku Nuku... Ranma 1/2... Kimagure Orange Road...Metropolis... 3x3 Eyes... Too many to mention.

Some of it is ok... Depends on what movie you see. The sex-with-demons anime doesn't do a whole lot for me, but the sex comedy stuff is sometimes pretty decent.

I liked Akira (of course), El-Hazard, Owedo(?) 808, Ranma (great!). There's others, but I can't think of them at the moment.
