Game Crashes - Help?

Aaugh! My game keeps messing up, and I saved it at a place where it messed up and now I have lost that save file!

First, the graphics on the status screen (when I right click on my party member) started messing up a little, then the graphics on the radar portion of the screen started going weird; I saved my game, and now every time I try to load that game file again I get this odd message:

ERROR: You are viewing a message intended for the developers of Wizardry 8. Please report the following information to technical support. We apologize for this inconvenience.
Debug assertion in module E:\Wizardry8\Engine Code\levels.cpp line 233 failed: Expression (some long expression) evaluates to false.

I am running the unpatched version, but I haven't got to Ascension Peak yet; I just portaled into Rapax Rift from the T'Rang place. (I was proud of myself because I had just defeated all the Veterans and Warmages that are at the prisoners, but that is gone now)

what a bummer, plg! it sounds like a corrupted game file to me, but i've never had a crash so i cant really help.

i can say i've been playing the patched version ever since it became available and it's never had a problem. so if you dont mind gimping pp, you might give that a go.

i hope you have an older save of that game still!

You can also get copies of earlier patches, i don't have a link, but there's a German site i found Searching that has Patch 001b, which fixes Toxic Cloud and AP without disturbing PP. (also leaves infinite Brekeks alone)
I had a problem like the one you described, that went away as soon as i got more RAM and a bigger HD.

The Common Problems / Reported Issues page is often worth checking out.

For this one, I'd first suggest re-copying the LEVELS.SLF file (from Disc 3) to the HDD (just overwrite the existing file, and check afterwards that it's not set to Read-Only).

Also, unless you REALLY just have to have pick-pocketing, would recommend you install the 12_23 patch (downloadable from the Wizardry 8 web site), as it fixes much more than just the Ascension Peak issue, at least check out the list of fixes.

This may be a tad off-point, but will SirTech still swap out disks if you return a defective one? My disk 1 has a crack in it, and I was wondering if anyone is minding the store at SirTech anymore. Thanks
