I just installed Wizards & Warriors on my machine, which is running Windows XP. I played before, but I noticed it is not working properly. Just in the first town, I can't go into either the Town Hall or the Mage Guild. Also, the gold cheat was only working intermittently.

Has anyone run the game in Windows XP? Any suggestions?

I realize the game wasn't designed to run in XP, so I'm not faulting the game. I'm just wondering if I can get it to work.

Thanks.

Welcome into the WW Forum, AndyG. May your time in the Gael Serran find you with sword, spear, and staff that are more than a match for your enemies.

As for your question, there are a couple of things to do.

 • The virtualdub fix. Expands all the AVI files so they will work properly.
 • Run in win95/98-compatible mode. Check the properties on your WW shortcut link.
 • DirectX version and drivers. Recent is better...
 • Stop in at the Boogre Bar for refreshments and to let us know how it's going.
 • Check the soon-to-be-updated Techie Help Desk thread for specifics and details on all these things. I'll make sure it's on the first page, if it has slipped off.

Gentlemen

I really need your help! I am also using Windows XP as my OS
and I can't seem to get the Virtualdub fix to work for me.
All it does is rename my "townmsk1,2,3.avi" and nothing more.
When I look at the properties for these files, it still shows
16 bits size instead of 32 bits. Could someone please help me with
this, or send me copies of the "townmsk1,2,3.avi" files already
converted?! PLEASE!!

Veay,

First and foremost, welcome to the boards! May your journeys through the Gael Serran cause your enemies to cower, your friends to brag, and your bards to sing.

You need to follow the virtualdub directions completely. It gets a little tricky because you need to convert the .avi file, save it with a different name, and then rename it to the existing file. Once that's done, you should see a dramatic difference in file sizes -- to the point where emailing the files to you will not be exactly practical

If you look in the Sazerac's Help Desk thread (which I'll bump if it's wandered off), you'll see more details on how to use virtualdub.

You're most welcome, Veay. It's part of the fun around here.

And so, good hunting in the Gael Serran to you. Do keep us posted on how things are going -- we get a strange satisfaction from knowing how others are faring throughout the Gael Serran.
