My mac has lasted a while but I do think that my ipod's batteries will probably run dry after 18 months

So...I don't get it...are the batteries unique and cannot be replaced with something you pick up at the store? Who makes crap whose batteries have to be replaced by sending it in to the manufacturer to put in for a fee of a million dollars? Please enlighten me.
